I sporadically go to the Arnhemse Fijnhouthandel. I don't know any place with a nicer wood collection, so for me it's a beautiful place to be. I saw a very nice piece of curly pear wood and immediately started getting ideas of what i could make with it.
One of my interests is the nature. I think it's fascinating how things work in our universe and on our earth. How the earth moves and rotates at a ridiculous speed and we don't notice any of it. How the sun is far from the biggest star in the universe. But also how trees and plants grow and new species of plants and animals are still discovered every single day. Nature gives me many ideas that can possibly be translated into something.
Penumbra is a half shadow created when the earth is partially in between the viewer and the sun. Two other possibilities are Umbra and Antumbra, probably two upcoming projects in this series at some point. The idea of this project was to let the natural shape of the wood (called a live edge) form the shape of the cabinet. The beautiful piece of pear wood takes most of the attention while its extruded shape made of stained plywood is like a shadow behind it.
You can take a look at the process on my instagram as a highlight.
